We are seeking qualified candidates for the position of Head Cook in Urbanna, VA.

Job Summary

A Head Cook is primarily responsible for overseeing the operation of a kitchen or cafe. They coordinate and delegate responsibilities to fellow staff and work alongside the food and beverage team. Head Cooks also have many other duties beyond the kitchen. They review food and beverage purchases, and often train cooks and other food preparation workers. Must be organized and very responsible and be able to handle the influx of orders and have the knowledge of food preparation, food cost and food waste.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Be attentive to receiving inventory and following FIFO technique 
  • Supervise and coordinate activities of cooks and other food preparation workers
  • Develop recipes and determine how to present the food in an appealing manner
  • Plan  and execute menus and ensure uniform serving sizes, quality of meals and serving times
  • Inspect supplies, equipment, and work areas for cleanliness and functionality
  • Train, and supervise cooks and other food preparation workers
  • Order and maintain inventory of food and supplies alongside the F&B manager
  • Monitor sanitation practices and follow kitchen safety standards 

Qualifications and Skills

Communication skills. Because the pace in the kitchen can be stressful during peak dining hours, cooks must be able to communicate their orders clearly and effectively to staff.

Creativity. head cooks must be creative in order to develop and prepare interesting and innovative recipes. They should be able to use various ingredients to create appealing meals for their customers.

Dexterity. head cooks need excellent manual dexterity, including proper knife techniques for cutting, chopping, and dicing.

Leadership skills. head cooks must have the ability to motivate kitchen staff and develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with them.

Sense of taste and smell. head cooks must have a keen sense of taste and smell, to inspect food quality and to design meals that their customers enjoy.

Time-management skills. 

Serv-Safe Certification is a plus
